2011 SMH Half Marathon Preview
It’s only nine days until the 20th annual Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon. This is one of the highlights of my running calendar each year. I first ran the SMH Half in 2007 and have now run it three times, (see my report from last year's race here). I’m signed up again for this year’s event and am looking forward to toeing the line again on Sunday May 15.
The course has varied a little over the years with the last few years comprising a two lap course starting on College Street in front of St. Marys Cathedral and finishing in Hyde Park. While the location of the start and finish have not changed, a new course has been laid out this year which comprises a single lap and takes runners across the other side of Darling Harbour into Pyrmont and Ultimo.
There is a great interactive map of the race on google maps/google earth which gives you a great look at the new course. It takes in some great views of the world’s most beautiful harbour and of some of Sydney’s iconic landmarks.
Mid-May in Sydney is typically nice and cool in the mornings with the temperature around starting time usually between 8C/46F and 12C/53F. May is also one of Sydney’s dryer months, so the chance of perfect running conditions on race day are very good.
I’ve been having a few issues with my left knee this week, but with a bit of rest and a lighter training schedule, I’m hoping that I’ll be fighting fit for race day. Who knows, I may finally beat 1hr 45 mins!

A veritable smörgåsbord of running goodness
Recently I wrote down a list of all the great races coming up that I'm keen to enter and I was amazed with the number and variety of what was going to be on offer over the next eight months. There's no way I can compete in all of these events due to the amount of time away from my family that would entail, but if I could get in 10-12 of these, I would be very happy. Those in bold are events I'm already entered in or which I'll definitely be taking part. What's on your calendar for this year?

1000 kms on my Nike Free Runs+
Last week I passed the 1000km mark on my Nike Free Runs+. Here's how they look.
I've actually been very impressed with these shoes. They're marketed as a 'barefoot shoe' which is absurd, the term is an oxymoron for a start! But they are a good minimalist/transition shoe and a lot more sturdy and long lasting than I had anticipated. I really enjoy running in them and can feel how much stronger my feet are for having used them. However, these ones are now past their use by date and I will be decommissioning them shortly and replacing them with a pair of Nike Free Run 2s.
